The ‘Someday’ That’s Finally Here

Play episode

The Bob & Sheri Show is basically a small family business. There are only 9 of us, and of that number, only 5 are full-time. We’re a really, really tiny operation. Most of us have been together since the very beginning – we’ve raised kids together, celebrated marriages and birthdays and graduations. We’ve grieved together, carrying each other through breakups, divorces, deaths. Our little family has weathered terrible tragedy, and more than once we’ve wondered if we could pull it together and keep going. Somehow we always have. I think people would be amazed to know how little conflict or drama we’ve had in all this time. We really do love each other, and beyond even that, we really like each other. I think of Bob, Max, Todd, and Tony as brothers, and I love them like brothers. Spending my working life with these guys has been a blast – like playing every day with your best and goofiest friends. The friends you can count on to have your back no matter what. Your crew.

Of course, I knew that it couldn’t last forever, and that things were bound to change eventually. But that idea is like the idea you have of yourself as a very old person. “Someday”, you think. And you wonder what that far-off “someday” might look like. And you tell yourself that “someday” is too far off to worry about right now and besides, there’s just always so much to do today.

And then that imagined “someday” comes. Which brings me to a major change for the show. It’s no secret that the pandemic has upended the way we live. Some things, hopefully most things, will eventually return to the kind of normal we took for granted pre-covid. Lots of things are forever changed – for instance, I know dozens of people who have already been told that they are on permanent work-from-home status. Businesses have gone under. Entire industries are in turmoil, facing seismic disruptions. Radio is one of the industries being forced to reckon with the chaos that covid has rained down on all of us, and radio has been hit hard.

For most of our career, we were radio employees. It was nice having dental insurance and a bogeyman to blame for stuff – even I feel sorry for the parade of middle managers we’ve cheerfully tormented over the years. It became very clear to us, though, that if we wanted to continue doing the show we love, the show you’ve so kindly supported, the only way forward was to strike out on our own. We took the show independent in 2017. It was terrifying. It was exhilarating. It was the single best business decision of my life. It meant gaining control over our destiny, but that control came at the price of a regular paycheck, corporate benefits, and, as it happened, Todd.

Because as much as Todd loves the show, he really, really loves programming. And he’s good at it. It’s where his radio heart is, and we all wanted to support him in that. So, back in 2017, we struck a hybrid deal: Todd would continue working for The Man, doing programming and music. Remaining part of our show was part of that deal. It worked out great – until The Man sold the business, and a whole slew of talented, hard-working folks found themselves unemployed. Folks like Todd. Folks who are the casualties of what this pandemic has done to our industry.

We scrambled, but anyone who listens knows that Todd is a single, widowed father who would put in 24-hour days to take care of his family if that’s what was needed. After much soul-searching, Todd came to what must surely have been one of the hardest decisions of his life: he accepted a (really fantastic) job offer outside of the radio business. At this point, he needs long-term job stability, something no one in radio can promise. Even sitting here typing these words gives me vertigo – I can’t imagine not spending my days with him. And yet, even as I grieve his leaving the show, I’m thrilled for this new opportunity that awaits him. And I respect the hell out of him for, once again, always placing what is best for his family above his own desires. There aren’t words for how much we will miss working with him. It’s going to take a long time for this to settle in and seem real. He will always be family, always that guy I know I can call in the middle of the night to come jump my car battery. I’ll still go hang out on his porch, drink his liquor, and talk endless smack about everything. He’ll still be the guy shooting bottle rockets at Max and yelling, “Jager shots in the kitchen!” at his epic parties. He just won’t be on the show.

I wanted to share this news here, where I could at least explain what’s happening. This is a good thing for Todd. We’re happy for him, and we’re so proud of him and all that he accomplished in his radio career. We love you, Super Todd! Here’s to your next chapter! Wherever it takes you, just know this: we’ll always leave a mic on for you.

  • He will be missed, he has such a great way of pulling family, household responsibilities, homemaking off while still being punk, a partied and sharing great stories. It was amazing what all he pulled off. I think his days had more than 24 hours in them.

  • OMG. I am so sad that Todd is leaving but at the same time I get it. But it sucks big time. I’ve started my day with you all for YEARS and can’t imagine how you all must feel.
Hope he found a fantastic job but make him promise to keep in touch with you all so you can give us updates.

  • You’re right, it wont be the same, but Kudos to him! So glad he has found a great job with benefits (other than to be your friend) to care for his family.

Best of luck Todd, you will be missed!

  • We can’t choose our family, but we can our friends. The more we’re with them, they become grafted in as our true family…except for the ones we cut loose. They share our love, laughter, and burdens without judgement…okay – sometimes they judge, but only in the best way. They help pick us up when we have fallen. They stand with us when we need to feel strong. They laugh with us when we have done something dumb. Friends can be the best put together family. Your lives touch our lives in so many ways. Todd, my husband and I are happy for you, but will miss you greatly. Clear the trail ahead and make the great impact we know you can. Our prayers are with you.

  • I am happy for Todd and wish him the best. However, I hate learning that. He has been a part of the show for so long and this is a big change. Each of you has been an integral part of the team. Pieces in a really small puzzle that are intricately linked to one another. He will be missed.

  • Todd, your faceless radio family loves you, and we will miss you and your family stories, so please drop in occasionally and give us an update! All you need to do is download the BobandSheri app on the google or apple store, then tap on that tiny microphone. . .

  • All the very best to Todd!!! We will miss him too and I hope you can incorporate a weekly “what’s up with Todd” segment to the show to keep us in touch with him and how his life is going. You are all so amazing and it’s a wonder that you have been together so long and made it work. We’ll miss you Todd!

  • Certainly very well written and very nice. Will miss Todd. Will miss the show when that day comes. But for now, I am thankful to be able to enjoy your show. Keep doing the good things you are doing. I feel a tiny bit like part of your family as well.

  • Soooooo sad, but happy for Todd and his next steps into life’s adventure. You will be missed!! Please do some cameos when you can. We would love to hear your voice in your limited spare time, if possible. Get out there and slay the day on your new path, Todd!

  • It’s a sad day for the Bob and Sheri show, but I totally understand that Todd needs to take care of his family first. As I read this letter from Sheri I could only think the worst that they were breaking up and going off the air ! I was at least able to finally breathe when I got to the end. Wishing Todd all the best and I know that the show will go on. Thanks for all the laughter you bring everyday.

  • I’ve been a listener for many years, and love you all like you are my own family. I listen to your podcasts because you are not on the air in my area. So I’m always a day behind, but I listen every morning getting ready and on my way to work.
I am so sad to hear Todd is leaving but wish him the best in his new adventure! I’m going to miss you Todd! I hope Bob & Sheri will share news of you and your kids and how things are going for you. I’m sure they will. Best of luck!

  • Thank you for the explanation, Sheri. Todd’s been an important part of the program. And you’re right, it seems like your “banter” is “all in the family”. Best wishes to Todd. To the rest of you, ” pick up the slack”😃
I enjoy listening almost every day.

  • Todd, you’ve always been a big part and heart of the show! I’ve been a listener for over 20 years now. I was always a thorn in your side, when iTunes didn’t load your podcast! I live out in Scottsdale so if you and your family ever venture out here, look me up. Best of luck in your new job; we understand that you must do what’s right for your family!🥰😎💝🌵

  • I used to listen every day for over 10 years. During the last 5 years it became clear our values didn’t align. You’re moral compass is off. I’ve seen how your liberal, “do what feels right” has lead your children down a road of moral deviancy and it’s disgusting. One day you’ll realize that people who are fighting justice issues is a tool to align the government & corporations working together to hold people into a little box so they can’t thrive. History is repeating itself, liberalism has become a religion and if you don’t subscribe to their standards you MUST be destroyed, again HISTORY repeating itself. We are all being lied to daily from both sides. I never thought America would become what it is becoming. I know you wont receive this the way I hope you would because we’re all to dug into our own positions. I did love your show but something changed.

    • I’m sorry JD that you feel this way, but my God…why would you think a tribute to a person leaving the show would be the right time to bring it up? Read the room and realize that jut because you have an opinion doesn’t mean you have to put it out into the freaking universe. Geez Louise.

  • I will grieve the loss of Todd from the show as if I had lost one of my own family members. The Bob & Sheri show has gotten me through some of the darkest times in my life (before and during the pandemic). I am a single mom (divorced) who has battled to keep the smile on my face while balancing home and work (for the good of my family). I have always had the utmost adoration for Todd. In fact, I had a little “crush” on him before I even saw his picture. The awesome way in which he parents his kids while still being himself (a very tough balance) amazes me. Although, I will miss him; I salute him for again being brave enough to leap out into uncharted waters for the good of his family. Todd, you are loved and will be very much missed. God bless you and full steam ahead…may you find joy and success in this new chapter of your life.

  • I will miss Todd. His contributions to the show always made me laugh-he reminds me of some of the male friends I have had through the years. I wish him the best, and hope he can”stop in” every once in awhile with some of his craziness!

  • Love each of you and all of you. Change is sometimes required and is always difficult. Wishing the best to Todd, who is always so much fun to hear on the show! Hope for your best success as you move forward.

  • I’m so sorry that Todd is leaving but I’m very happy for him. He has been a great addition to the show, and I’m sure he will be successful in his next venture. Love you, Todd. ❤️

  • Wow! What an amazing opportunity for the next chapter in Todd’s life and for the Bob and Sherri Show, as without chapters, we would not have a book filled with stories! Life if full of changes, and we are the blessed ones to have had you all in our lives and chapters. I am forever grateful, as you all make me laugh, cry and wonder about the wild characters you must all be. Thank you all and good luck Todd, although I am sure you will be very successful. I look forward to hearing how Todd and the show are doing, as I am sure it will continue to offer me great joy.
    Always a fan
    Barb

  • Congratulations to Todd. What a loss for the rest of us. I have been listening to this show for 20 years and feel like I know you all (although I don’t really) As others have said, your show has gotten me through some dark days and provided countless moments of laughter and tears. Thank you for your perseverance during this crazy pandemic. It’s been one of my major coping skills. I lost my husband unexpectedly before the pandemic and being alone in a pandemic has been a challenge. Your show helps me get through.

  • I’m so sad but TOTALLY UNDERSTAND. I’ve been a listener for a long time. I can’t remember when I started listening to you but I know it was before you were married to Mark. I’ve always felt like I were part of my family because I listened to you everyday but since this pandemic I haven’t been listening to y’all as much because I as well lost my job due to covid. I know super Todd will be missed!!

  • So sad to hear this, but so happy that Todd has found a good position! Always have loved his voice, stories, and sense of humor. Maybe Max could be together a Best of Todd reel for us at some point?

Best of lucky to Todd and his family. New adventures await!!

  • Oh no! Your radio family kept me going through some tough times. I could always have a good laugh (or several) to start my day. As much as I love you all, I could identify with Todd. Family first for a single parent is just different. Todd, I wish you the best in everything. You deserve it. Know that you got many through the day with a smile on their face. You are my hero. We will miss your family/kids/ Dad stories. Enjoy your new adventure.

  • I feel sad for all of you. I know what it feels like to leave people you love to better yourself in the employment arena. But at the same time, good for you Todd. It’s easy to stay where you’re comfortable and happy. Not so easy starting fresh. Best of luck to all of you.

  • Awww, man. He was such a part of the show, and I hate to see him go… but congratulations to him on his new role. I get the sense that Todd will be a rockstar in whatever he chooses. And… now you will just need to do a regular segment featuring Todd!!

  • Faaaaaack!! So sad to see you go Todd. :’(
Maybe you can come by the B&S show once in awhile and say hello?? Whatever you do, wherever you go, I wish you the best in all you do.

  • I follow some of what JD commented on earlier. I love listening to the show and all of you I know you are all good honest hard working folks who are so dedicated to helping us listeners get through our days a little easier you can always put a smile on my face, that being said I too have noticed your political views becoming more and more present as time goes on. I realize especially with the Covid and an election year it’s been hard to really talk about anything without bringing politics into the conversation. I miss the good old days were we could just listen to all of your crazy times and stories about life without any political bias. I still listen and probably always will because I’ve learned a lot about life from all of you I just wish you could leave some of the politics out. Best of luck Todd I’m sure you will do awesome! Thanks for listening to me, Andy.

    • politics? we go to extraordinary lengths to keep politics off the show. I genuinely don’t know what you’re referring to here.

    • Andrew, you have no idea what you are talking about. They refuse to talk about politics, period. End of story. Matter of fact, on their podcast, they make a statement saying that if anyone is airing a political advertisement along with their show that they do not condone nor approve it and would appreciate being contacted so that they could have it removed. So, what are you going on about?

  • Oh this makes me so sad! I have listened for years and I will miss hearing Todd’s voice and stories. That said, he is an awesome person (He’s been my secret boyfriend for a while lol) and so happy he found something to provide more stability and ease!

  • Best of luck, Todd. Once a member of the family, you don’t stop being one simply by moving into a different phase of your life. We all wish you the very best and hope you will know that as a member of the Bob and Sheri family you will always have a home in our hearts. To Bob, Sheri, Max, Lamar and the rest please know how much you all mean to us and know that we will miss Todd along with you and grieve the loss while celebrating the future.

  • OH NO!!!! I had the pleasure of meeting Todd when you guys drove The Dirty Baby into Bangor! Happy for him, but sad for us! Good Luck!

  • I wish you the absolute best, Todd! It’s clear you have given your best to everyone who is lucky enough to know you!

  • It’s a unique relationship as y’all are so very important to me. The show will never be the same but I certainly wish Super Todd the best life has to offer! I hope he maintains some kind of social media presence. Please don’t quit us cold-turkey! I love each of you 😘

  • Well, dang. Who’s gonna’ make me promise not to curse before they put me on the air when I call the show?! 🙂 Me love you long time, Super Todd. Wishing you and yours the best always.

  • I have listened to Bob and Sheri for too many years to count. Some of the best parts of the show for me were Todd’s stories. You will greatly be missed. I am really happy for you though and wish you the very best. Please make sure that you drop in when you can and catch us up on all of your exploits. Much love to all of you .

  • I am sooooo sad to hear this news. I am a long, long time listener and feel like a family member is leaving. I wish you all the best in the future, and hope you will pop in every now and then. We will miss you 🙁

  • Beautiful tribute. Good Luck Todd in your new role. I’ve always enjoyed the entire team. You will be missed.

  • I had to pull over to the side if the road when I saw the email arrive I was so fearful the show was ending. Your show has been my “happy place” for so many years, I feel you are part of my family. Super Todd is awesome and brings so much to the show but will obviously bring many talents to a new career opportunity. Best of luck to Todd and his family. Continued success to all❤️

  • OMG! So happy & sad at the same time. Sheri, you know this just puts the extra job of keeping us updated on Todd onto your shoulders, right? 🤣 Love you Todd, you are an inspiration always!

  • Best of luck to Todd and his family. A big loss to the show but you all will persevere. Todd is an inspiration for always doing what is best for his family, Herm would be proud. Thanks for the laughs in the morning.✌🏻
On another note, that JD fellow sounds like he would be the life of any party.

  • I will miss Todd’s voice and his laugh. He doesn’t jump in and talk during the show very much, but when he does, it always touches my heart. I hope he visits the show here and there, so I will get to hear his cheerful smiling voice again. He will forever be missed by me! At least he’s my FB friend, so he’ll still be around. I really hate COVID now, more then ever!

  • Sorry to hear about Todd. He will be missed but I wish him luck. I feel bad for the rest of the team. I’m sure it will be hard on all of you. Hang in there. We will still look forward to listening every day.

  • I was so afraid that the show was ending when I saw the title of Sheri’s article. So, while I’m elated to know this wonderful “norm” of life rolls on, I’m so sad to know one big piece of it will be missing. Must have been such a difficult decision for Todd which makes it all the more admirable! I’m happy to know he won’t be out of your lives; just not with you from 6-10 am.

  • Super Todd will be missed. You need to make him a super Todd T-shirt or cape or both. You’re a wonderful team.best of luck always. From Maine.

  • Looking forward to the occasional (and hopefully frequent) appearances Todd will make on the show. I hope this change turns out to be something you will all look back on and find that it benefited you all in spite of the heartbreak you’re feeling now. Thank you for being such a wonderful team/family!

  • So well written!
Good luck in your new chapter Todd. Thanks to all of you for my making it a little easier in the morning getting ready for work!

  • I’m actually crying. I have been with you guys since the beginning. Since I was in middle and high school (I will be 37 this year). So like, REALLY the beginning.

Of course, as you say, Sher, all good things must come to an end. From someone who has literally never met any you but also feels like I’m related to all you, I wish Todd and the entire Bob and Sheri team the absolute best

    Sobbingly, the very best

  • Just now reading this letter. Thanks for letting us know, Sheri. I’ll miss listening to you Todd because since 2002, listening to you & Max backing up Bob & Sheri has been a true pleasure. All the best to you and your family, Todd!!!!

  • I just saw this thread. I hate to hear that TOdd is leaving, but I know he must follow his heart and do what is best for his family. I wish him all the best. Maybe he can do a short segment every day or at least on Friday to keep him in our lives (even if it is pre-recorded). I sure will miss him. GOOD LUCK TODD ! in your new adventure. SEND US A POST CARD sometime !! We LOVE you !!!

  • I wish Todd the best. Have been wondering where he was. The Bob and Sheri show has started my day for years. It has been such a positive, timely, interesting and intelligent way to start the day. I felt like I knew Bob, Sheri, Max, and Todd. And then there was Lamar. Now there is a vacancy in my morning routine that won’t be filled until I find them again, hopefully soon.

  • I have been listening to Bob & Sheri since the mid 90s. My life has undergone many changes, both physically and emotionally over the years, but there have been only brief periods of not having Bob & Shari in my life. When I moved from the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia to Richmond VA in 2005, podcasts didn’t exist. I don’t remember exactly when the podcast became available, but I was extremely happy to have them back! I’ll never stop listening.
It was good to hear the details of Tod’s departure, but please tell him I miss him terribly. I’m happy for him and I wish you would have him on with you guys as a guest. Or maybe have him write a blog every now and then.
Love you all and your positive, humorous and entertaining influence in my life.
BTW I’m 75 YO and am ecstatic to listen to you whenever I want!
