Broken baseboards. Leaky showers. Pest invasions. Messy ceiling tiles. Welcome to the wonderful world of home ownership, Doc!
I recently bought a house for the first time. For a long time I never even contemplated becoming a homeowner, but sometimes as we get older our priorities change, and what we want out of life evolves with it.
This entire process has been a solid lesson in remembering the importance of moving through life at your own pace. Here I am celebrating the accomplishment of purchasing my first house in my late 30’s, while so many people I know from high school and college did the whole get married/have kids/buy a house thing in their 20’s. Trying to keep up with the Joneses back then would’ve been a disaster for me.
So how’s this homeowner thing been going for ya, Doc? Well I’m happy to report that it’s been as stressful as humanly possible! I love when everything breaks at once!
For the first 10 days I had no running water. I spent so much money to get the well repaired that I will now need to create a Bob & Sheri OnlyFans account to recover. I haven’t been able to use the kitchen yet because bugs suddenly decided to pop up from who knows where looking for a free meal. They’re trying to stay here rent-free? I don’t think so.
The list of things to repair in this fixer-upper goes on and on, but I’m grateful for the opportunity to be in this position at all. It’s going to be a tremendous learning experience for me, a person with zero handyman experience, to figure out how to do all those things the DIY people on HGTV do. How am I supposed to fix this hole in the wall? How do I fix the shower valves without flooding the entire house? Thankfully there are tons of YouTube videos for literally every home repair idea imaginable.
It’ll be worth it when I can transform this house into the home I envision. A home I will never invite anyone over to visit because I’m an introvert. It’ll look wonderful on Instagram, though!
Oh Doc- welcome to the “I own a house now and have no freaking idea how to do all this crap that looks so easy on HGTV!” Club. I’m the president of this club, just so you know.
Doc, congratulations on your new home! Yes, it’s (owning a house) a huge responsibility, but very rewarding once you know that it’s your own place, yours to clean, or yours to leave a happy, cozy mess! I love being at home too. Not an issue for me and my hubby. Enjoy your new home, it’s well worth the journey !
I am usually too introverted to comment, but I got over it to say GO Doc!
Congratulations! You will learn so much and maybe hate it a little but love it even more ❤️
Just remember no one was born an expert. Ask questions and invest in good tools (estate sales are a good source).
❤️❤️❤️
Congrats ‘Doc’ on your new adventure as a homeowner! You should be very proud and terrified at the same time. YouTube will become your new best friend. Seriously!
Your home is adorable! You may have little things to do, and some big ones too, but it looks like you have a good roof and solid foundation. (Essential to every relationship.)
Love that you are a part of the Bob and Sheri family now. You are a fortunate man indeed!!
By the way, I listen to the show every day and have for many many years. You all have gotten me through some rough times and have lifted my heavy heart. … I hear you from N. Calif., above San Francisco, on the Pacific Coast Highway, Hwy. 1.
May God Bless you, your new home, and all your new adventures! …Take Care.
Doc- This is the first thing I’ve read from you, and you’re hilarious! Just your intro had me chuckling “an introvert too awkward to leave.” I’ve been listening to Bob and Sheri for years, it’s a pleasure having you here now too! Good luck with the house and rent free (insect) guests!
Love this Doc! I actually saw your instagram post on your new home purchase & was so happy for you. Exciting/very stressful! : )
Also, I love your tagline “An introvert who accidentally stumbled into a radio studio and is too awkward to leave” lololol
Congratulations! I’m an old fart that’s been a Bob Lacey fan since 1973 … listening to his late night show in my dorm room at UNC-Charlotte … Sheri has made such a positive addition to the entire Charlotte scene … so good to hear them every morning …
Anyway … why I felt compelled to write you …
As I said, I’m an old fart (67) and not in the best of health but have a lot of home-owner repairs experience … I’d be more that happy to give you an assist, if it’s up my alley and I’ve got the weekend time … dad always said, “you never ask you never get” …
Good luck with your career and your new home … you’ve got to be so very proud!
Mark
Congratulations Doc!!!! Welcome to the wild world of home ownership!!!!! You will tackle these things one at time, like we all do. Forever and forever. I learned a lot from watching This Old House. You got this!
Good luck Doc!! And just so you know, that home repair thing never stops! When you get one project done, 3 more are necessary. But we love you Doc! And are so happy you joined the Bob and Sheri Show because we love them too!
Hey Doc: I’m married to an introvert, so I can smewhat identify:) You’ll have so much fun fixing up that house! A little piece of (unsolicited) advice: go ahead and have a housewarming once you get it all fixed up. What’s the worst that can happen and who will care ten (or even five) years from now!
You got this Doc! We’re all super happy and excited for you! Congratulations 🎊
Congratulations Doc! I am glad to get to know you more. YouTube has been a life saver for me who has no fixer up skills. Maybe you could have Bob help! 😆
Congratulations Doc!!!!
Good luck with the house Doc and welcome to the Bob & Sheri show I’ve listened for years and always enjoy your input.
This is awesome news! Congratulations Doc! 🏡❤️🏡
Congratulations on your new home and Congratulations for taking your life at your own pace. It makes all the difference. Between YouTube and a local home improvement store where clerks have worked in the field and can coach you, you’ll do fine. (In Eugene, Oregon it would be Jerry’s Home Improvement Store). I hope you’ll post from time to time so we can enjoy your progress.
CONGRATULATIONS Doc!! Yep It’s A Wonderful Life when the heat pump needs to be replaced and the garage door opener refuses to lift the garage door anymore, but, I have a kinda cute little front porch to watch the sunset through my beautiful trees shading my house, and I believe that’s what makes it worth it😊
Congratulations on all the joys and heartaches of home ownership.
