My husband is in love and it’s not with me. I was looking at him yesterday and he has big heart eyes, just like the emoji. I caught him holding hands with his new love. Kevin’s new love is an emaciated rescue dog that was pulled by law enforcement out of a house where eight dogs were chained up and starving.
I always said that when it was time for another dog, we would know. Kevin’s been longing for a dog. He’s been wanting a dog, but he hasn’t been ready to do it.
So he put it off and put it off…finally, he couldn’t stand it anymore. I said, “Well, I’ll go with you and we’ll look at the dogs together.” If you’re in the market for a pet and you can rescue, please rescue because these shelters are overflowing, and a lot of these dogs and cats are not going to make it if no one shows up for them.
There were gazillions of dogs, and they were all wonderful. Some of them were so sad and they’ve given up hope; they’ve lost the faith that anybody could ever want them. It’s hard walking Kevin through that.
But we came upon this one cage and we looked at the paperwork and this dog; you could see every rib, every bone.
He came to the front and he was just real tentative and he was looking at us. I knew as soon as I saw him. The shelter worker pulled up the dog’s record and she’s just kind of shaking her head. She said, “he was neutered two days ago.” He was brought in by police and animal control. He was very underweight with kennel cough, but the vet had cleared him. He had his antibiotics and shots, and he was chipped.
I said, “Let’s meet him.” So we go into the little meeting room and I sit down on the floor, and the man brings the dog in. The dog is skeletal, but he walks over and he sits down on the floor looking at me.
And then he carefully lays down and puts one paw on my leg and the other paw on my leg and then rests his head in my hands. I looked at Kevin and he was overjoyed because he knew that meant he could have the dog. So I was like, “Well, my love, this is your dog. And if you want this dog, we’re going to rescue this dog.”
His name is Bridger. Of course Kevin named him after famous mountain man Jim Bridger.
We brought Bridger home. We had no idea how this dog is going to be with kids or cats. Bridger is so chill that he’s nose to nose with the cats. He licked Larry Munson’s head, which Larry Munson did not consent to (he was furious that anyone would lick his head without buying him a drink).
We fed this dog a special nutrition regime to get him built back up. He’s just precious and he deserves a chance. And thanks to my husband, he’s getting one.
I just love to see the updates on Facebook about Bridger! He is looking so healthy and happy, he’s even smiling : )
I love following Bridger’s story!
My last comment was messed up. It is so awesome to see how Bridger has come along while he has been with you. He is so happy and healthy now! I love watching his updates in Facebook. Several years ago we rescued a pit bull mix that they got off the streets. He has made the best dog! He is so sweet and is also very protective! They know in their heart that you saved them! Please keep the updates coming!
I love this! My friend and I are trying to open a spay/neuter clinic in Sonoma County. We can not adopt our way out the overflowing shelters. We are modeling after a clinic in Fresno California called Hope Animal Rescue. They are open 5 days a week and only do spay/neuter.
The H.O.P.E. Clinic was completed in June of 2006. The clinic is modeled after the Humane Alliance in Asheville, NC, an organization that has helped to establish and mentor over 100 spay and neuter clinics across the nation. They average between 16,000 and 17,000 surgeries each year. We may make a trip to Ashville to meet with Alliance in Ashville. Keep spreading the word! God bless you and Kevin for rescuing Bridger.
So awesome to see the story of Bridger and Kevin and the loving home you are providing for sweet Bridger. Animals give so much love back to those that rescue them but as a rescuer myself, I know that sometimes they rescue us. Please keep those joyful progress reports coming.
The daily Bridger updates & pics are giving me hope, in a world where hope is seemingly in short supply. I try to put my focus & energy right now where a positive difference can be made, vs. getting sucked into the chaos. Bridger’s story (and those who have made it possible) is one of the positive differences.
Sheri,
This is so heartwarming. Thank you🙏
Two wonderful people are getting this precious dog a chance to have a beautiful family, he is already in love with Sheri and Kevin. Thank you for rescuing Bridger 💜
I’m not sure who is cuter, Bridger or Kevin. I’m happy for you Sherri that you now have a great man and another dog to love.
I have a rescue toy poodle that will be 14 in November. Daisy Mae is the reason I get up every morning with a smile on my face. We saved each other. Enjoy❤️
Thank you so much for rescuing! You are so right – – the shelters are overflowing with wonderful dogs like Bridger. I’m happy he has a great rest of his life! Your story (Kevin’s story) is so heartwarming! I’m happy for all of you, especially Bridger.
These pictures absolutely radiate love! Thank you for sharing!
I love this love story. It warms my heart. You and Kevin are awesome! So is Bridget! He looks so happy.
