Say goodbye to unnecessary ‘thing’ clutter
Anytime is a great time to do some (drum roll please) “spring” cleaning, and what better place to start then with what I sometimes refer to as dust collectors or knick knacks.
I often discuss how we accumulate things in our homes and sometimes we need to take the time to declutter these objects so that they do not overtake our living spaces. Knick knacks can be fun; don’t get me wrong, we all love candles and vases and cute candy dishes, but how many of these things do we need? Put another way, do we need countless items or would a few special pieces serve our purposes just as well if not better…
The great knick knack declutter may be best endeavoured as a room by room exercise where you literally go from room to room and assess what items you have – they may be prominently placed out or housed in a cabinet, but they must all be examined for keep or give away. Cherished mementos should of course be kept but many things we keep in our homes do not fall into that category and can be ‘moved along’ quite easily. Getting rid of things may not necessarily mean donation or the trash, it can also mean giving away to a loved one for them to have and love. Personally I find that I get a lot of joy from others enjoying things that have brought me joy at one time, and if I no longer need something, what is the phrase…’pass it along.’
Things are things and stuff is stuff, and at the end of the day having more does not increase joy it simply clutters our lives, so it is important to cull and declutter our things. Less is more and I know that this declutter will bring you calm, joy and ease.
As you go about this decluttering, make sure to include some cleaning because why not? Objects and items that you are keeping and need a good dusting or cleaning should be tended to and then put back where you want them, also make sure to wipe down the surface that was underneath them, often a much forgotten area. Last but not least, have fun and know whether you are keeping an item or not, it will find its way to a new home!
