Shew. Last week was a tough one. It damn near killed me when we lost Dolly. Then, the very next day, to find out about Tim Curry. Dammit. I’m not ready to write about Dolly yet. I need some more time to process it. If we are being totally honest here, I’m not sure I’ve totally accepted it. So, prepare for a sobbing, blubbering mess of a blog post in the near future. This week, I’m going to focus on my lifelong love of Tim Curry.
My obsession with Tim Curry started when I was a wee lass. My family had a peculiar obsession with the movie Annie. I’m not joking when I say we watched it multiple times a week. I know my mom, sisters, and I saw it well over 100 times. Seriously, we damn near wore that VHS tape out. I don’t know how it lasted so long. Y’all, if you have not seen it, do it now! You will not be disappointed. It is an absolute delight. I give it a large part of the credit for my love of musicals to this day.
My favorite song in the movie Annie is Easy Street. It features my sweet Tim as Rooster, and boy, he really shines! The performance features Curry, Carol Burnett, and Bernadette Peters. How is that for star power!? The singing and dancing are just perfection. It was one of the first things I watched after learning of Tim’s death. I laughed and cried simultaneously. You see, I have never mentioned this to anyone before, but I had something of a crush on Tim. Yes, I know he was the bad guy in the movie, but he was so smooth, dapper, and handsome! Throw in the singing and dancing, and 11-year-old me was weak in the knees. I make no apologies.
NOW, imagine my surprise, and dare I say excitement, when in college I watched The Rocky Horror Picture Show for the first time and my dear Rooster struts out in fishnets! I almost stroked out. Dr. Frank-N-Furter was everything—bold, confident, brave, irreverent, and, hell yes, he was sexy AF. I could not take my eyes off him. I loved every second he was on the screen. I have seen the movie numerous times since then and have been turned on every single time.
Now, I have never dressed up and done it in a theater, but there is still time for that. I think I could rock Magenta. I’m trying to talk my daughter into watching it and dressing up this Halloween. There is a great old theater near where she goes to school that does up Rocky Horror every year at Halloween. They actually did it just this past weekend to honor Tim Curry. I’m pleased to report every showing sold out.
Honestly, Annie and The Rocky Horror Picture Show are just the tip of the Tim Curry iceberg. I damn near lost my mind when I found out he was going to be in Muppet’s Treasure Island. No one loves the Muppets more than this girl, and to have Tim playing a pirate alongside Kermit, Gonzo, and Fozzie? Dreams really do come true! Needless to say, it was a home run in my book. Very few people are Muppet-worthy, but Tim Curry is certainly one of them.
Then there is Clue. Shew, how good was he in that? His panache for physical comedy is unmatched in this fantastic flick. Again, I loved every second he was on the screen. Such a funny movie. I could watch it over and over again.
Sure, I could go on—Pennywise in the Original IT, the clerk in Home Alone 2. Curry’s breadth of work was vast, but I will leave it with those classics and what they meant to me. Tim Curry was a fucking legend, and he will always hold a dear and special place in my heart. Please raise a glass in his honor soon. He was a gift to the universe.
