Sometimes, I like to re-circulate old blogs and podcast episodes, updating them as I continue to grow, learn, and evolve. It’s amazing how reflecting on the same moments or people can bring new insights, year after year. September holds a special place in my heart, not just for the change in season or the promise of autumn, but because it’s the month both of my parents celebrate their birthdays. This time of year always makes me reflect on how deeply they inspire me, not just as parents but as people.

But first, I’ve got to say sorry, Mom and Dad! Wow, teenage years were hard. Karma, am I right? 🤣😂😜

My Dad’s September Birthday

My dad’s birthday falls early in September. He has always been a pillar of strength and wisdom in our family. Each year, as we celebrate his birthday, I’m reminded of the lessons he’s taught me about perseverance, hard work, and staying true to a strong moral compass. He instilled in me the belief that with enough determination and dedication, you can achieve anything you set your mind to.

One thing that continually inspires me about my dad is his love for learning. Even now, he has this endless curiosity and drive to grow. He leads by example, showing that life is a constant journey of self-improvement, and it’s never too late to pursue your passions. Whether it’s picking up a new hobby or diving deeper into a subject he loves, my dad has always demonstrated that knowledge is one of the greatest tools for personal growth. His birthday isn’t just a day to celebrate him; it’s a reminder of the power of curiosity and lifelong learning.

My Mom’s September Birthday

As September progresses, we come to my mom’s birthday. She is the very definition of selflessness and kindness. My mom has this effortless ability to balance everything, her career, her family, and life in general. And she does it all with a sense of calm and grace. Honestly, it’s something I admire so deeply because, let’s face it, I often feel like a ball of stress and overwhelm. 😩

But she never shows that side. My mom is always the first to lend a helping hand or offer a kind word. Whether it’s giving advice, listening without judgment, or simply being there for someone in need, she shows up. Her compassion is limitless, and she has this gentle way of making everyone feel heard and valued.

Parenting Ahead of Their Time

I often think about how ahead of their time my parents were, especially in the 80s and 90s. Their approach to parenting felt more aligned with how people parent today far from the stereotypical, don’t come home until the street lights are on, off on your own, and more rigid styles of those decades. They weren’t just supportive; they actively believed in my sister and me, encouraging our creative visions and teaching us that we could achieve anything with a little time and effort. They always reminded us to believe in ourselves and to go for it.

When my sister and I both had the dream of moving to LA at different times and periods in our lives they didn’t just support us, they pushed us to follow that dream and try it out. They allowed us the freedom to grow, travel, and experience life on our terms, all while standing firmly in our corner, cheering us on.

Lessons from Their Love

As much as my parents’ individual birthdays are times to celebrate their unique qualities, it’s their combined influence that truly shapes who I am today. Their love and partnership have always been a constant in my life, showing me the power of a strong and supportive relationship. Together, they’ve built a foundation of love, trust, and unwavering support, and that’s the kind of family they’ve created for us.

Through them, I’ve learned that compassion and patience can change the course of someone’s day or even their life. They’ve shown me that small acts of kindness, whether it’s a kind word, a thoughtful gesture, or just being present for someone can have a profound impact.

For me, September is more than just a month of birthdays, it’s a time for reflection. It’s when I think about the amazing people who have shaped my life, the values they’ve passed down to me, and how I can carry those forward in my own life. My parents have been incredible role models, not just during my childhood but throughout my adult years as well.

Each year, their birthdays remind me of the importance of kindness, curiosity, selflessness, and perseverance. I’m truly fortunate to have such incredible parents who continue to inspire me every single day. Their love, support, and example are things I carry with me not only in September but all year long.

To anyone who’s lucky enough to have parents like mine, take a moment to reflect on the ways they’ve shaped you. We don’t always realize it growing up, but as the years pass, it becomes crystal clear just how much of who we are stems from the love and lessons of our parents. So here’s to my mom and dad, and to all the parents out there who continue to inspire their children to be the best versions of themselves.
