I have been married for nearly 32 years. Anyone who has been married that long realizes you just have to make some concessions for your partner. One of my bigger concessions has been Marvel movies. I’ve watched a lot of superhero movies for my husband. Not all of them, but a lot.
In the Marvel Universe, my favorite is Thor. I mean, hello? Chris Hemsworth. I also like the Hulk. Captain America got on my nerves a bit. Ant-Man was fun. The Avengers was a good time, and I loved Brie Larson as Captain Marvel.
I have seen and know just enough to get through most of these movies. I usually have questions, but my husband always has the answers. It works out.
This weekend I played the good wife and went with him to see The Thunderbolts. It was very entertaining. It was a bit violent for my taste, but it had enough humor to keep me engaged. I also love David Harbor even though I’m mad at him for cheating on Lily Allen. He was fantastic in the movie.
Blockbuster superhero movies are all fine and well, but they have ruined things for all other types of movies. Everything that comes to theaters now has to be a blockbuster. It’s exhausting. I just want a good comedy or a nice mystery.
Sure, these movies pop up occasionally. The Knives Out movies are great. As are the Agatha Christie flicks. However, when was the last time we had a good When Harry Met Sally? It feels like it has been years. Bridesmaids was epic, but that movie is more than a decade old. These kinds of movies just don’t get made very often anymore. If they do, it feels like they are just on a streaming service and not on the big screen. That is a travesty.
I remember when indie films were all the rage. Think Juno, 500 Days of Summer or Little Miss Sunshine. Those were brilliant movies. I miss those types of movies. Movies with heart.
Just last year, while on a retreat in the woods, I watched The Leftovers. It was brilliant and won some awards. I think it might have been on in the theater, but it was brief and did not come to my town. What a loss. It was such a lovely movie. More people should have had the opportunity to see it.
I guess that is the problem, though, people don’t go and see these types of films anymore. It’s all about the action blockbuster. Enough already.
I’ll still continue to humor my husband and go to superhero movies with him, but I sure wish I could watch a good movie that did not involve explosions or men in tights.
