Avery hails from Winnipeg, Manitoba, with a background in both law and yoga! As a long time Yoga Instructor, she hosts the Journey Into Yoga podcast, a show which explores and demystifies a different yoga posture each week. A true believer in creating space in our bodies through yoga, her Declutter U newsletter is designed to provide tips and tools on how to create more space in our lives by decluttering.

I think many of us may be guilty of letting our emails pile up in our inbox. Try as I may, I still often have a large number in that red circle attached to my inbox. We simply get too many emails to keep our inboxes free of clutter, but what can we do to declutter these inboxes? How can we stay on top of this not so fun job?

Many of us are far too busy to be constantly addressing this task – also it is not that rewarding of a job to complete because we all know that the minute we clean out the inbox more emails will jump right back in. My suggestion is to take on this job on a weekly basis (pick a day that works for you), and take some time on that day to declutter your inbox. I find that consistency is key, so diarize this task on that day each week; if you keep up with this task regularly, you will be able to control everything from junk emails to emails that require attention and response.

DELETE DELETE DELETE

Think of the delete button as your garbage bin –  everything that needs to be deleted gets deleted. Don’t forget to go into your trash and delete the trash as well – full trash boxes represent garbage being left on your computer that you don’t need or want.

Another helpful hint is to make sure you also go through your sent box, as these sent items, which you likely don’t need, take up valuable space in your email box. In your deleting journey make sure to venture over to the sent tab and delete delete delete there also (with the same principle of emptying your trash box after this).

Even though the clutter on our computers is not exactly tangible, a messy overstuffed computer is not helpful. It can slow down the computer’s functioning and can also create confusion in finding necessary emails and other valuable things. There is no reason not to keep your computer (and phone) free of clutter as you would your home or other living spaces.

On that note, happy deleting!

Aside from helping with all of our decluttering needs, Avery hosts the Journey Into Yoga Podcast where she guides you through a different yoga pose each week explaining all that it has to offer the body and mind.
