Only three?
I don’t know about you, but I found this prompt surprisingly difficult.
Three words feel like they’re supposed to define an entire person, yet we’re all so much more
than that. Depending on who asks, the answers might be completely different.
My husband might describe me one way. My family another. My clients might choose different
words altogether. Someone who met me for five minutes at the grocery store would probably
come up with something else entirely.
Then there’s the version I see when I look in the mirror.
The truth is that we’re all made up of hundreds of qualities. Some we’re proud of. Some we’re
still working on. Some show up only in certain seasons of life.
After giving it some thought, the three words I chose were curious, compassionate, and
authentic.
I’m curious because I’ve always wanted to understand people. Why do we think the way we do?
Why do certain memories stay with us for decades while others disappear? Why do some places
feel like home the moment we arrive? Curiosity has led me to read, travel, ask questions, and
listen to stories I might have otherwise missed.
I’m compassionate because I genuinely care about people. Whether someone sits across from
me in a session or shares part of their life in a casual conversation, I want them to know they
don’t have to pretend. Life is hard enough without feeling like we have to hide the parts of
ourselves we’re afraid others won’t accept.
And I’m authentic because I’ve reached a place where I value being real more than being perfect.
I don’t always have the right words. I don’t always get things right the first time. I change my
mind when I learn something new. I apologize when I need to. I’d rather be honest than polished.
The funny thing is, if you asked me this question ten years ago, I probably would have chosen
three completely different words.
That’s one of the beautiful things about being human.

We aren’t finished.
We grow. We evolve. We discover new strengths, let go of old fears, and sometimes become
someone we never imagined we could be.
Maybe the goal isn’t to find the three perfect words.
Maybe it’s to keep becoming someone we’re proud to describe.

Reflection: If someone asked you this question today, what three words would you choose?
More importantly, would those words reflect who you are today…or who you’re hoping to
become?
