We’re in unprecedented and unchartered territories. As I told my 10 year old daughter, not only I have I never lived through something like this but neither has her great-grandmother – who survived the Great Depression and a World War.
It’s scary. So much is out of our control. The very basis of our lives have been pushed off a cliff, seemingly overnight.
I’m worried. I’m worried about the battle that we face with COVID now and the repercussions that it will bring in the future.
I’m reading and keeping up, but I’ve decided I’m not going to constantly obsess and hand wring…despite being very good at both of those. I don’t have a skill set that is particularly helpful in a time like this, but I’ve decided that there are a few things that I can do right now.
I’m going to limit my time on social media.
I’m going to follow the recommendations from those who have dedicated their lives to science and medicine.
I’m going to support small businesses, wait staff, bartenders, grocery store workers and medical personnel in ANY way that I can.
I’m going to adapt.
I’m going to stay home.
I’m going to slow down.
I’m going to give my family extra hugs.
I’m going to pet my dog and remind her what a good girl she is more.
I’m going to wash my hands – a lot.
I’m going to leave groceries for others.
I’m going to ride my bike with my girl.
I’m going to have a beer on the back deck with my husband.
I’m going to read and watch movies.
I’m going to keep practicing getting a pour over right.
I’m going to be grateful for this unexpected, extra time with my daughter.
I’m going to exercise.
I’m going to take naps.
I’m going to listen to music.
I’m going to FaceTime with my friends and family.
I’m going to check on my gran.
I’m going to write.
I’m going to love my people.
I’m going to remember my humanity.
I’m going to survive.
I’m going to remember that I have lived through times that were much scarier than one that calls on me to hang out on my couch with the people I love most.
I’m going to remember how much more fortunate I am than many.
And, when it is over:
I am going to get to work in any way that I can to help hold the line.
I am going hug the absolute sh*t out of my friends.
I’m going to have a crowded table.
I’m going to make more of an effort.
I’m going to remember that it all falls apart if we don’t take care of each other.
I’m going to remember how quickly life can change.
I’m going to continue to extend gratitude to grocery store clerks, medical personnel, truck drivers and wait staff and sanitation workers.
I’m going to support teachers.
I’m going to be eternally thankful for being here.
We have different viewpoints, worship different Gods, adhere to different ideologies and we may never agree if pineapple belongs on pizza. However, in the end, we must remember that the only way to survive is to remain in this, all of this, together.
