Now that we are into warmer months and very well may be sitting outside more on patios and decks, perhaps it is a good time to think about decluttering our interior spaces in our homes.

We are no strangers to having and using furniture in our living spaces, but how much do we really need? If our homes have too many pieces, we may have less room to move, to live, to breathe literally! Several newsletters back we looked at rearranging a room in your home, which also discussed possibly getting rid of stuff in the process. As we look around our living spaces, perhaps ask yourself the question: are there pieces of furniture that I could easily get rid of; that are not being used, allowing some space to be freed up in my home? As you take stock, you may also discover another use for that piece or pieces: maybe a family member can use it in their living space or maybe it can be donated. I like to think of furniture this way: “use it or lose it.” Furniture can be big, bulky and cumbersome, and when our homes are overly cluttered we can find ourselves tripping over it with no room to move. I like to stick with the basics and then of course some accent pieces that bring me joy.

Whether your spaces are big or small, start with the basics. Obviously a comfortable sitting area is key, and you want to make sure that it can be a cozy gathering area for your friends and family. Storage is important too, so you want to make sure that your items have a space, but it is important to keep those spaces clutter free as well. Here is where you may have some decisions – how many end tables make sense? How many chairs/lamps/you name it (antiques?) can a room tolerate before it starts to look like a store rather than a living space?

STRONG HINT – If you are constantly banging into your furniture, you may have too much. Cull some out for give away or the trash – create space and love it! I promise you that when you declutter your furniture, what you will be left with are the items that truly matter to you and that will bring you joy. Too much is literally just that: too much!

Aside from helping with all of our decluttering needs, Avery hosts the Journey Into Yoga Podcast where she guides you through a different yoga pose each week explaining all that it has to offer the body and mind.
