Last week I received a message from, clearly, a very high quality friend
alerting me to the fact that Petsmart had a sale on Guinea Pig Christmas outfits and I had better act fast if I wanted in.
Immediately I got online to search this obvious necessity, and when many of the outfits I was choosing were out of stock I expressed my displeasure, to which my husband responded with a laugh,
“Ha. Must not be the will of God.”
But joke’s on him, friends, because find an available outfit I did,
and just a few days later I held that guinea pig sweater in my hot little hands.
“How much did you pay for that?”
“Cost mattered not,” I said.
“What even IS it?” my children laughed.
“It looks big enough to be a Quinceanera dress!”
They scoffed at me and mocked my dreams, but I went to get our guinea pig out.
He fought me and hid in his castle.
Maybe, in some way, he knew.
“Come on, Tyrion. Today is your big day.”
You see, necessity has changed to me.
This year has stripped the old definition away.
What I needed was something cheery, and delightful, and I think a guinea pig in clothes is a perfect way.
Yes, it is November,
and we don’t usually put up our tree until December has begun,
but I’m already a full week into listening to strictly Christmas music this year.
I told my oldest daughter to prepare to be mortified by how I’m about to appear in public,
all decked in Christmas gear to the nines. Blinking sweaters, dangling ornament earrings.
“I’m about to get real embarrassing,” I told her.
“I just want you to be prepared.”
She just shrugged to suggest that it was nothing really new.
That we were already there.
Now, I’ll admit, I did have a tiny moment when I was sticking tiny claw feet through red knit where I wondered if this was Mommy not feeling alright,
but as I fastened on the velcro of the antlers,
I knew I was feeling just fine.
I tell you this to encourage you do find that one little silly thing that’s only purpose is to make you smile,
or usher in cheer of some kind.
Now is the time for it.
My daughters have told me it’s too early to start with Christmas things,
but I argued that to me it is the perfect time.
It might even be late.
Now feels like a time for living dreams.
Now feels like “whatever brings you joy.”
Put up your tree,
chop your hair,
put your guinea pig in his Christmas best.
