I have ADHD and Autism. I was diagnosed later in life (30) I’ve always struggled with certain everyday tasks. Finishing projects, deep cleaning, routine are all things that I find nearly impossible to keep up with honestly. As soon as I find a groove something comes along and its as if that plan never existed in the first place.
So, I was doing a bit of reading on ways to motivate myself into getting these things finished and getting myself moving again and one suggestion was “punch cards” admittedly it was geared towards teens and children but honestly what did I have to lose except for a few notecards?
So the idea is simple, you can write or draw your goal on a notecard and as you complete that task you use a hole punch and give yourself a little punch out. At the end of the card you “earn” a reward. That can be anything from a special dinner for yourself to a jacket you’ve really been wanting.
Keep your goals reasonable, don’t rush yourself and remember that its a marathon not a sprint.
This is also good to rewire my need for instant gratification and make small things more meaningful. I’m more likely to complete a project knowing I can punch a slot on my card and work towards my larger goal. For me doing this in a visual medium really helps.
Of Course, this isn’t going to work for everyone, but so far its working for me.
