January Chronicles: Ortho Surgeries, Lizard Baths, and Breakfast Adventures!

On the very same day that I’d set aside to haul my currently immobilized husband into his first postop shower, I learned that my daughter’s reptile, Yeti the leopard gecko, also needed a bath.

Why am I bathing husbands and lizards? Just pure luck hahaha.

Kevin’s ortho surgery was a gruesome palooza. Multiple bones broken, ruptured tendon tossed in the garbage, another tendon yanked over to take its place. Can’t put weight on that leg for 10 weeks – won’t be fully recovered for a whole year. This man is an outside dog and the amount of sitting still that he’s facing is more than he’s managed in probably his whole life. He hates being fussed over, hates it. I thought he’d love the idea of sitting on a plastic chair in the shower while I scrubbed him down. But no. Not so much.

Then I headed for Yeti’s habitat. Poor thing was mid-shed and couldn’t seem to get the old skin off his little head.  Had to coax him out of his log, wait for him to climb into my hand – that took approximately 47 years – and then transferred him to his bath bowl. Which turned out to be my salad spinner. I thought Yeti would love having me gently scrubbing at his wee noggin with a Q-tip. But no. Not so much.

Tornado, power outage, cable and internet down – and that was just the first day. Oh, and then my credit card got hacked and the refrigerator seized up and died. We’re having the most January of all possible Januarys over here.

It’s all good though. I like taking care of people. Been cooking some new things to keep the man’s spirits up. I found a recipe online for these yummy breakfast sandwiches made with Pillsbury crescent rolls (link below) and am trying to get better at asking for help. Things could definitely be worse. I have no idea what the next few months are going to be like, for the hubs or the reptile. Kevin misses his garage, Yeti misses Caramia – and I miss my salad spinner.

  • When it rains it pours. Was listening to all this on the show and thinking if this was a a movie, people would say it’s laid on too thick. I was glad that you did not have a breakdown.
Instead you have the best attitude. May as well, eh, beats being upset. It’s all good as long as everyone is basically healthy, broken bones and all. Love, Mia

  • Wow! What a January! Sounds like alittle too much… Kev will have to find some series (or 20) to watch on Hulu or something.. later will he get one of those little scooters that he can be mobile, somewhat?? I rarely get to listen anymore I’m going to have to check the podcast to see what happened! Take care of yourself, Sheri!!!!!

  • Apparently I missed something. What happened to poor Kevin? Wishing him a faster recovery than they predict!
I was t-boned a couple of weeks ago, car was totaled but thankfully my daughter and I were very lucky. So as we recover: we pray for his recovery (and Yeti’s too, ha ha!)

  • I love your positivity about it all! Also, it is hilarious to me that you also used the number 47 to express magnitude. It’s my go-to! Regardless, you’ve got this. You always have!

  • How did Kevin get hurt? It sounds really bad.
There are 2 kinds of husbands. The ones that LIKE being babied and taken care of and those that DON’T.
Mine is like Kevin. I hope the healing goes fast for both of your sakes.

By the way: I have been at all of the times you were in Aberdeen, SD. And I own a “Bob and Sheri t shirt. I remember Bob’s wife letting you auction off her boots to the help the Boys and Girls Club in Aberdeen. A great place for kids!

  • Well Sheri! It’s been a month for you that’s for sure. You’re not the only having a rough January. I think this month is broke. Hope everything evens out and I love to hear about all of your exploits with Bob and the gang. (At home and on the show.) Love all you guys and take care.

  • As we say in the south, Bless your heart. I’ll never forget when my husband had to stay off his leg. We had a hospital bed in the living room because we live in a 2 story house. I work 10 hours a day and as soon as I would get home, it was I need this, do this, do that. 😳 I would then go for a walk just to relax. I Survived and he survived.
You’ve got this. I love the way you you tell it with humor. I had a friend in West Virginia that would have you laughing at her problems. She told them with humor too. 🙏🙏

  • What a January you all had??! The picture says it all! Lol. I’m sure as some time goes by n Spring emerges maybe w/help Kevin will get back into his man cave? That will help you both
As for the Frig and any modern appliance, well they are made to last only until the warranty is over-told by a representative dealer to me! Yeah.
Hope your February will be much better, then there’s Life!

  • o ma gah, I am so sorry to hear abour Kevin’s situation. I had no idea the two of you were dealing with this.
sending healing love to the both of you.

  • Sher, the fact that you still have your wicked sense of humor throughout this month is Amazing!!!! Tell Kevin to check out “Reacher” on Amazon. It is great. Also “Rabbithole” with Keifer Sutherland. Healing hugs to all! ❤

  • A friend and I sometimes describe the bad month/week/year we’ve had, and then decide which one of us is the ‘winner.’ Sheri, your January won the prize for Month of Blurry Fiascos.
My husband, also an outside dog, had back fusion surgery in August of 2022 with a year of recovery ( but not the 10 weeks off the leg. Yikes). It was not an easy year for either of us. Is he doing physical therapy for the rest of his body?
If you can budget for it, you probably need some help for the 10 weeks. Your back/ general health will need it. I hope Kevin has a speedy and problem-free recovery.

  • “Life be lifin'” is what a patient told me. Sounds like u gotta Lotta life going on. Hang in there and hoping Kev heals quickly. Man prolly feels like a caged bear….hang in there!
