Book: 3000 Unique Questions About Me
Question#: 642

Prompt: “If Greyhound Lines hadn’t chosen the greyhound, what would make a great bus logo?”

I expected to spend a minute answering this question. Instead, it took me on a journey I wasn’t expecting.

My first thought was a racehorse.

It made sense. Racehorses are fast, powerful, graceful, and built for endurance. But what really stood out to me wasn’t the horse itself—it was the jockey.

Unlike a greyhound, which runs on its own, a racehorse depends on a skilled rider. The horse provides the strength and speed, while the jockey provides the guidance. One without the other isn’t nearly as effective.

As I continued thinking about it, another memory surfaced.

There was a time when I regularly rode the bus to visit family. I traveled from California’s Central Valley to the Bay Area, and sometimes all the way to Carson City, Nevada. The trips were long, but I never really minded them.

In many ways, they were relaxing.

I didn’t have to worry about traffic. I didn’t have to navigate unfamiliar roads. I could simply find my seat, look out the window, read a book, daydream, or just watch the scenery change as someone else focused on getting us safely to our destination.

Looking back, there’s a lesson in that.

Many of us feel like we have to be the driver all the time. We convince ourselves that asking for help means we’ve failed or somehow given up control.

But sometimes the wisest thing we can do is let someone else take the wheel for a while.

That doesn’t mean we’ve stopped moving forward.

It simply means we’ve recognized that someone else has the experience, perspective, or knowledge to help us reach where we’re trying to go.

Whether it’s a mentor, a therapist, a coach, a trusted friend, or even a family member, there are seasons when we don’t have to navigate every twist and turn alone.

Eventually, it’s our turn to take the wheel again.

But there’s nothing wrong with being the passenger when that’s what the journey calls for.

Maybe that’s why a racehorse came to mind instead of another fast animal.

It’s not just about speed.

It’s about trust.

And sometimes, the fastest way to move forward is to allow someone else to guide you until you’re ready to steer again.

As I finished writing, I thought of the photo accompanying this post. I took it near my father’s property, where a few horses were quietly grazing. They aren’t racing. They’re simply being horses, and maybe that’s the point. Not every journey is about getting there faster. Sometimes it’s about trusting the path you’re already on.

A simple question about a bus logo turned into something much bigger for me. It reminded me of old bus rides to visit family, the comfort of letting someone else navigate, and the people who have helped guide me through different seasons of life.

It’s funny how often the simplest questions end up taking us on the longest journeys.

Now it’s your turn.

Reflection Questions:

  • Where in your life are you trying to drive alone when accepting a little guidance might make the journey easier?
  • Can you think of a time when letting someone else “take the wheel” helped you reach a destination you couldn’t have reached alone?
  • If your life had a bus line, what would its logo be? Why?
