Spring cleaning has always been a ‘thing.’ If you have been following along on this decluttering journey you are now well versed in the notion that decluttering is an all year affair and can happen anywhere and at any time. However, there is something about the spring that still boosts this urge to purge in many of us, and I am here for it!

There are many reasons why seasonal decluttering might be popular: for one, the change in season encourages us to shed our winter skins and move into a new promising season, one that we all most likely embrace after the cold of winter. Another reason is that with the warmer weather’s arrival, we can now access outdoor spaces and garages a bit easier making a full decluttering and spring cleaning easier! I for one love a good deep spring cleaning, even though I must confess that I do keep up with decluttering all year round.
The task of spring cleaning is going to take more than one newsletter so I am going to turn this into a series where we will tackle a different area each time. Today, our focus is going to be (drum roll please) our bed!! More specifically, the mattress. Now before you close this email and run for the hills, trust me this is an important declutter because sleep is not only important it is the most important! Mattress attention helps to declutter our sleep from potential interruptions that may result from a non functioning mattress situation, so try and stay tuned for some really important tips and tricks when it comes to our mattresses.
HOW OLD IS YOUR BED?
I know, when I asked myself this question I honestly could not remember (maybe that means my bed is too old or my memory is not good)! In all seriousness, if your bed is more than 10 years old it may be time for a new mattress. This simple replacement can change your sleep for the better and bring more restful nights to your life, and trust me, we all need our sleep.
WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME YOU ROTATED YOUR MATTRESS?
If you are scratching your head it more than likely means you have never rotated your mattress, and I will tell you something, this is very important. Rotating and/or flipping your mattress is crucial because your mattress will start to sag and drop in the areas that we tend to put pressure on it regularly. When we rotate and flip the mattress we allow it to re-settle and it adds life to our beds, and ergo, life to our sleep! You can do this in a few different ways: one way is to flip it over to the other side. Sometimes we have things like mattress toppers which will prevent us from doing this, so if this is the case for you, the other option is to rotate the mattress keeping it with the same side up. This method still allows you to freshen up the mattress without having to sacrifice having your mattress topper actually on the ‘top.’ Make sure to do this at least 4 times a year to ensure a healthy mattress.
INVEST IN SOME NEW BEDDING
It is always a good idea to get some new bedding more than every 100 years LOL. I am not just talking about sheets and pillow cases, I am also talking about mattress and duvet covers which may be sometimes referred to as the ‘hardware’ of our beds. These items often get worn out without us even knowing it, and it is very important to replace and freshen up each and every part of our bedding, including the parts we may not see as much.
LAST BUT NOT LEAST, CLEAN UNDERNEATH YOUR BED (MATTRESS)
This area of our bedrooms often goes forgotten usually because it is hard to access, but take the time to make sure the space under your bed is dust free and clean. The air we breathe when we are awake and asleep matters and sometimes we forget to ensure that our environments are clean and fresh to ensure a good night’s sleep.
I hope you enjoy beginning the process of spring cleaning and decluttering and there will be much more to come as we move through this journey!
