On April 14, 1912 a vessel carrying some of the world’s wealthiest aristocrats, in addition to a majority of 2nd and 3rd class average folks; suddenly and in an instant became the great equalizer. Peril did not differentiate between rich or poor.
A single iceberg looming in the middle of the sea turned the “haves and have nots” into one entity – desperate human beings struggling to survive an unforeseen catastrophe. While those in first class had an advantage over the lower steerage passengers, the sea claimed most of the lives on board.
We all know the history of the Titanic and how lack of planning and arrogance led to the must unthinkable disaster.
Today we are facing down the most enormous iceberg threatening our journey. While we were all busy living our lives and believing our homeland ship was unsinkable – we were suddenly jostled out of our delusional stupor.
The United States has sunk billions into weapons of war to defend against incoming missiles from foreign enemies – not so much against upcoming foreign strains of viral diseases.
How many lifeboats are out there? Who gets in first? What can we do to protect ourselves from this invisible enemy invading our shores?
Covid-19 is here. Like the Titanic it is the great equalizer. While there are those among us already looking to point the finger of blame – the key to flattening the curve and getting through this is to come together while we stay apart. Facts are our best and only vaccine at this point.
While we retreat to our different homes – it is important to remember we are all in the same boat experiencing the same threat. The best thing we can do is to be W.I.S.E.
Wash our hands frequently and thoroughly
Isolate ourselves when feeling sick
Socially distance ourselves as much as possible
Educate ourselves with facts and encourage others to do the same
Calm your anxiety with nature walks, soothing soak baths while listening to relaxing music, laughing at your favorite comedy sitcom, knitting, doing jigsaw puzzles, painting, coloring, stretching or simply sitting outside and listening to the birds sing. Stay well. Be kind to yourself and to one another my friends – NOW more than ever. Let’s keep this ship afloat.
