Book: 3001 Questions All About Me
Question#: 2418
Prompt: “Who of the people that I know has the most spotless home?”
That is definitely not me.
When I came across this question, I laughed immediately because the answer came to mind without hesitation. Our friends Stacy and her family have the most spotless home of anyone I know.
What makes that even more impressive is that her house isn’t one of those quiet homes where no one visits and everything stays exactly where it was placed. Quite the opposite.
There are four adults living there, along with two dogs, multiple cats, and a steady stream of family and friends coming and going. They live close to everyone, which means their house has naturally become the gathering place.
If someone wants to host a dinner, celebrate a birthday, or simply get together, chances are we’ll end up at Stacy’s house.
And whenever we do, it’s always a good time.
There’s always laughter, conversation, and food being prepared both inside and outside. Her husband has built an impressive outdoor cooking space that could easily rival a small restaurant kitchen. There’s a hand-built pizza oven, multiple grills, and commercial smokers that are constantly being put to good use.
Depending on the day, there might be pizzas going into the oven, something slow-smoking for hours, or several grills working at once while people gather nearby.
The house—and the yard—are full of life.
And yet somehow—almost magically—it’s also spotless.
What I notice every time we visit is how Stacy is constantly in motion. While everyone else is talking, eating, and enjoying the evening, she’s quietly doing a little bit of everything behind the scenes. Clearing plates, wiping counters, straightening things up, checking on the food, making sure everyone has what they need.
She moves through the evening like a host who understands that caring for people often happens in small, unnoticed moments.
Then the evening winds down.
People say their goodbyes. The dogs settle. The house quiets.
And if you came back the next morning, you’d never guess a gathering had taken place at all.
No evidence of the party.
No stack of dishes waiting.
No scattered reminders of the night before.
Just a clean, peaceful home.
I’ve always admired that ability—not just to host people, but to make it look effortless.
My own home tends to look more like real life is happening inside it. There are projects on the table, books stacked in places where I’m in the middle of reading them, and the occasional “I’ll get to that later” corner that somehow stays that way longer than planned.
But that’s part of the beauty of questions like this one. They remind us that we each have friends who shine in different ways.
Some people are the organizers.
Some are the storytellers.
Some bring the laughter.
And some—like Stacy and her husband—create the space where everyone can gather.
The spotless house might be the first thing you notice.
But the real gift is the warmth inside it.
Every home tells a story about the people who live there. Some are spotless. Some are wonderfully lived-in. Most are somewhere in between.
It made me curious…
Reflection Prompts:
- Who in your life keeps the most organized or spotless home? What do you admire about the way they create their space?
- Is your home more “perfectly tidy” or “comfortably lived-in”? What does that say about the way you move through life?
- Do you enjoy hosting people in your home, or do you prefer gathering at someone else’s place? Why?
- When you visit someone’s home, what makes you feel most welcome—the cleanliness, the food, the conversation, or something else?
I’d love to hear your answers.
