My husband is in love and it’s not with me. I was looking at him yesterday and he has big heart eyes, just like the emoji. I caught him holding hands with his new love. Kevin’s new love is an emaciated rescue dog that was pulled by law enforcement out of a house where eight dogs were chained up and starving.

I always said that when it was time for another dog, we would know. Kevin’s been longing for a dog. He’s been wanting a dog, but he hasn’t been ready to do it.

So he put it off and put it off…finally, he couldn’t stand it anymore. I said, “Well, I’ll go with you and we’ll look at the dogs together.” If you’re in the market for a pet and you can rescue, please rescue because these shelters are overflowing, and a lot of these dogs and cats are not going to make it if no one shows up for them.

There were gazillions of dogs, and they were all wonderful. Some of them were so sad and they’ve given up hope; they’ve lost the faith that anybody could ever want them. It’s hard walking Kevin through that.

But we came upon this one cage and we looked at the paperwork and this dog; you could see every rib, every bone.

He came to the front and he was just real tentative and he was looking at us. I knew as soon as I saw him. The shelter worker pulled up the dog’s record and she’s just kind of shaking her head. She said, “he was neutered two days ago.” He was brought in by police and animal control. He was very underweight with kennel cough, but the vet had cleared him. He had his antibiotics and shots, and he was chipped.

I said, “Let’s meet him.” So we go into the little meeting room and I sit down on the floor, and the man brings the dog in. The dog is skeletal, but he walks over and he sits down on the floor looking at me.

And then he carefully lays down and puts one paw on my leg and the other paw on my leg and then rests his head in my hands. I looked at Kevin and he was overjoyed because he knew that meant he could have the dog. So I was like, “Well, my love, this is your dog. And if you want this dog, we’re going to rescue this dog.”

His name is Bridger. Of course Kevin named him after famous mountain man Jim Bridger.

We brought Bridger home. We had no idea how this dog is going to be with kids or cats. Bridger is so chill that he’s nose to nose with the cats. He licked Larry Munson’s head, which Larry Munson did not consent to (he was furious that anyone would lick his head without buying him a drink).

We fed this dog a special nutrition regime to get him built back up. He’s just precious and he deserves a chance. And thanks to my husband, he’s getting one.
