I have been going through a bit of a tough time. My depression and anxiety are freaking intense and menopause on top of it all is creating quite the shit sandwich.
How am I trying to cope? Laughter. In my opinion, laughing is always the best medicine. It’s not always easy, but it is certainly worth a shot. Thank goodness for comedy specials on streaming services.
To power through my crazy funk, I have focused on female comedians. Funny women are simply the best. They do not get nearly enough props.
Let’s start with the great Leanne Morgan. Never has there been a woman who gets me and my place in life more than Leanne. Her latest special on Netflix is brilliant. To top it all off it was filmed in Lexington, Kentucky. As a Kentucky girl, this only makes me love her more. As does her yummy accent. She’s from Tennessee, but that is close enough.
While my husband and I watched this special, I howled with laughter because I felt like she was talking about me in reference to perimenopause and as a mother with a child leaving home. Everything she said was something I had experienced personally. However, I noticed my husband was not laughing about halfway through. I paused the show to ask him if he was not enjoying it. Upon my inquiry, I realized her commentary was hitting really close to home and he was afraid I would punch him in the throat if he laughed. Fair enough. That could happen. Long live Leanne Morgan. She is a queen!
Next up on my funny women list is Fortune Feimster. My goodness, she is hilarious. I have loved her since she graced The Mindy Project. She stole every scene she was in. I quickly became a devoted fan. She came to Kentucky to perform earlier this year and I immediately got tickets. She did not disappoint. My husband had no idea who she was, but was happy I was actually getting out of the house and doing something fun.
We had a blast at the show and laughed our asses off. In the next few days after we got home, we watched both of Fortune’s Netflix specials and later introduced our daughter to her when she was home from school on a break. All the Travers are huge fans. She is one of the funniest humans on the planet.
Last up on my funny women tour is the incomparable Wanda Sykes. I mean really, who is funnier than this woman? Her latest Netflix special made me cry tears of joy. We had to rewind the show multiple times because we laughed so hard we missed stuff.
What I appreciated most about Wanda was her timely humor. She tackled so much stuff from the recent news and everything she said resonated with me. Times are tough right now. The news is incredibly disturbing. If we can find a way to laugh while realizing there needs to be a change, that is a total win. Wanda’s humor can make this happen. She is revolutionary.
Life is hard, people. We all need a fucking break. I consider myself to be pretty funny, but lord knows there are plenty of people out there who have me beat. Turn to them and find a relatable laugh. Comedy is a most noble profession. I tip my hat to all the funny folks out there, especially the women. Being a woman is hard. Let’s pour a glass of wine and try to laugh at it.
