I can be a bit obsessive. I know this will probably not come as a big shock to those who know me or have been kind enough to read my nonsense. Much of it stems from my anxiety, but believe it or not, some of the things I obsess over actually bring my joy.
I would like to discuss one of my biggest obsessions (and joys): Schitt’s Creek. For those of you not in the know, this is possibly the greatest and most uplifting TV show ever made. “I’m obsessed with this!”
Notice that I said Schitt’s Creek was a TV show and did not go so far as to call it a sitcom. That is because it makes me cry almost as much as it makes me laugh. Granted, they are tears of happiness and hope, but I have flat-out sobbed on more than one occasion. “This wine is awful. Get me another glass.”
Schitt’s Creek has become my happy place. I have watched the entire series multiple times. When I finish, I just start it again. I watch at least an episode or two every week and have for more than two years. I catch new things each time and it just keeps getting better with each viewing—especially when I’m in a funk. “I plan on popping a pill, crying a bit, and falling asleep early.”
If pressed to pick a favorite character, I don’t think I could. Each one brings something special and unique to the table. I love Moira’s vocabulary and undefinable accent. I love David’s faces and flair for the dramatic. I love Alexis’ name-dropping and surprising wisdom. I love Johnny’s commitment to his family and never give up attitude. Those are just the main characters. I could go on about the secondary characters for days! Everyone in this show is delightful—even Roland, at times (if you know, you know). The most miraculous thing is how they all grow over the course of six seasons. I challenge you not to love these people. “I like the wine, not the label.”
I have several favorite episodes and moments in the show, but my very favorite is the finale of season three. Spoiler ahead: in this episode, my all-time favorite moment takes place. David and Patrick share their first kiss. I have watched this scene (and I’m not exaggerating) dozens of times. If I’m having a bad day, I google this scene and just watch it. It is total perfection. It never fails to improve my mood. “Thank you for making that happen for us.”
The continuous message of acceptance is what sets Schitt’s Creek apart from other shows. In this crazy little town full of quirky people, there is always acceptance. Show creator and star, Dan Levy, made this theme a point. It is beautiful how he succeeded in creating a world where people could be who they were meant to be. I believe this is why the characters evolve so much. They are allowed to explore who they are, make mistakes, find themselves and there is always support around them—sometimes in the most unexpected of places. “Well, you know, Johnny, when it comes to matters of the heart, we can’t tell our kids who to love.”
My obsession with this show has bled into my everyday life. Rarely does a day pass where I do not quote something from the show or send a Schitt’s Creek-related GIF to emphasize a point. I went through a phase whenever anyone said something obvious or that I had no time for, I simply replied with a random quote. “Honestly, what kind of kitten befriends a giraffe.”
In other obsession news, I have a water bottle covered in Moira Rose quotes, Funko Pop figurines all over my office, greeting cards hanging on book shelves and a David sticker on my car. I even went so far as to get a personalized license plate that reads “EWDVD.” That’s “Eww, David,” in case you are not in the loop.
I belong to a Schitt’s Creek fan page on Facebook and they are some of the kindest, most supportive people on the internet. I have never seen a negative post from the group’s members. Who knew that was possible in 2022? “Tweet us on Facebook.”
I can’t imagine a time when I will not watch this show. It gives me hope. That is something that seems to be in short supply right now. Long live the Rose family. They are greatly flawed, but they love and accept each other’s crazy. Schitt’s Creek is inspirational. “Love that journey for me!”
