I am self-employed. This is sometimes a good thing. This is sometimes a bad thing. It is more often than not a hard thing. As hard as it can be at times, the one point of gratitude I come back to is the strong, smart and talented women I have had the pleasure to meet and work with over the years.
If I were to sit down and make a list of all the wonderful women who have had an impact on my career (and go on to impact my life), I would need multiple sheets of paper.
I was very aware of the strong women around me in the corporate world, but I’m even more sensitive to it as a business owner. Why, you ask? Because without these women who have supported me throughout my career, I would not have a business. My women friends have come through for me time and time again. They never cease to amaze me.
I have had my business for 11 years. It started out as a side hustle and is now a full-time gig. There have been so many ups and downs, but whenever times have been hard, a friend or former co-worker has called me and said, “Would you like to work together?” or “Would you be interested in…?” It always seems to work out and much of the time it is because of a woman I’ve had the pleasure of working with/for/around. It is such a gift in my life.
As well as helping keep my business afloat (and the wine flowing), these fantastic ladies have also introduced me to other fierce women who have improved my life.
My work tends to come in cycles—it ebbs and flows. It has been a wild ride the last couple of months, but I’m hanging in there. When I get discouraged, I look around and think, “I know some real badass bitches who are inspiring AF. This shit is going to be okay.”
What I love most about these chicks is how we all stick together. We help each other and want desperately for each other to succeed and be happy. What a wonderful thing to be a part of.
These women have brought me into things I never would have dreamed of doing. They also make me laugh every damn day. While these folks are smart and successful, they are also hilarious and if they do not share, they at least put up with my off-color sense of humor. I have the best laughs with these gals.
I hope I have given back to these ladies just a little. I try to pass work along when I can and lord knows I’m always up for wine and cheese. My treat! I will also travel to the ends of the earth to spend time with my girls.
One of my biggest parenting goals is to instill in my daughter how important girlfriends are. I talk to her a lot about the women I know, work with and love. I see her developing these sorts of relationships for herself. It makes me very proud and happy.
Being a woman is hard. We have to stick together. Goodness knows we are so much stronger together. Folks, never underestimate Girl Power. It is everything.
