What is this blog about? Well, it's a general blog, but it is also a very specific blog. If you get that
reference, you get a gold star! I have been a public relations professional and writer of press
releases for more than 20 years—primarily in the booze biz. I decided to do some writing for
fun and embrace the humor that gets me through most days. Hopefully it will make you
chuckle—or at least smile. I’m a certified crazy magnet, and more than a little nutty myself, so
buckle up. Also, I have two vices—profanity and red wine/whiskey. You’ve been warned.
It should also be noted, that I’m a HUGE Bob & Sheri fan. I’ve been a listener for more than 20
years. This opportunity is a dream come true and it may have made me cry. That being said, I
cry at everything.
If you are into booze, dogs, food and/or knitting, hit me up on Instagram, Facebook or Twitter
(although I’m terrible at Twitter and it scares me) @kyspiritsgal. You can also find all my

As I have stated before, I really hate this time of year. I’m cold. I’m sad. Everything hurts and I’m dying. Overall, I’m just fucking grouchy. However, there is one thing that helps see me through the dark days of winter: sports.

We are big sports fans here at Casa de Traver. My husband will watch anything involving competition. In desperate times, I have caught him watching cornhole on TV. I’ll watch most sporting events, but I do tap out when it comes to car racing and baseball. Those things are dull as dirt to me. I just can’t get into it.

My favorite sport is professional football. The playoffs are what get me through the dismal month of January. I get incredibly confused near the end of the regular season when the analysts go into great detail about various playoff scenarios, but I roll with it. I don’t need to understand all that to enjoy the games.

In fact, I would be bummed after the Super Bowl were it not for my second favorite sport: college basketball. College basketball is a religion where I live. We bleed Kentucky Wildcat blue. It’s very intense, but I love it. For years my husband and I vowed to burn our couch on the front lawn if Kentucky won it all. It was a horrible couch and we were looking for any excuse to get a new one. Also, hello? It’s Kentucky. That behavior is an acceptable celebration.

I also love basketball season because I get to see more of one of my favorite sports commentators, Charles Barkley. Sir Charles is a hoot. I surf all the channels looking for Chuck. You just never know what he is going to say, but it is most often insightful and amusing. I also enjoy him on the credit card commercials with Samuel L. Jackson and Spike Lee that air throughout the tournament.

During March Madness I watch so much basketball I know the backstories of even the most obscure teams and players. I almost always cheer for the underdog. Unless, of course, they are playing the Cats, in which case, I want them to lose horribly.

The best winter sports years are undoubtedly Olympic years. I almost don’t mind winter if I have the Olympics. I do prefer the summer Olympics, but I’m all in when it comes to curling and snowboarding. I watch that shit like I have money on it!

My bestie is also a bit of a sports nut. We text incessantly during big games and sporting events. Someone should hire us. Our very colorful commentary is excellent. We are both very knowledgeable about sports, but we also break down pregame outfits, players’ significant others and wacky behavior. I feel like we have a niche.

I know a lot of folks don’t put a lot of value in sports, but I will forever be a big fan. They are a welcome distraction from the stress of daily life as well as a way to bond with others. To quote my man Chuck, life without sports would be, “turrable.”
