I’m very grateful I don’t have much of a sweet tooth. I’m often perplexed by my husband’s need for nightly ice cream. I eat ice cream maybe once or twice a year. He will also eat the hell out of some brownies, cookies, cake, pie or anything with sugar. I’m happy to take a pass on most sweet things, but I do have a weakness: salty snacks.
Is there anything better than a potato chip? I think not. I also love popcorn, crackers, and I will cut a bitch over some salt-cured meat. I feel about salt the way a good portion of the population feels about sugar. I have to have it.
I wish my salty snack addiction was better for my health and waistline than sweets, but I’m not kidding myself. I know these salty delights are not healthy food.
I try to keep most of this stuff out of the house, but as my bestie once pointed out, “Sometimes you just have a chip emergency.” If I find myself in such an emergency, I will go to great lengths to get a chip.
My current obsession is Carolina’s Dill Pickle Chips. Dear lord, these things are a gift from the gods. I’m not even a pickle fan, but I could eat my weight in these chips. A friend and I actually special order them because they are so damn good. This same company also makes an amazing salt and vinegar chip and a rosemary and garlic chip that will take any sandwich to the next level.
Overall, I’m a pretty healthy eater. So, I don’t beat myself up over the occasional indulgence. There are even times when I go all in and combine two of my favorite things: wine and potato chips.
If I’ve had a bad day or just want to treat myself, I find chasing a bag of sour cream and onion chips with a big glass of red wine to be almost heaven. I’m not proud of this, but here we are. I don’t even remember how I discovered this combo, but I can’t untaste the gloriousness of it.
I have a theory that the calories of chips do not count if eaten whilst traveling. Yes. I eat a lot of chips on the road. There is just something about a road trip that demands a bag of potato chips. While traveling, I find it interesting to try regional chip brands. My favorite regional chips are Grippo’s BBQ made in Cincinnati, Ohio. They are unlike any other BBQ chip. Warning: they will light you up!
I also feel a movie at the theater is impossible without a big tub of salty popcorn. I don’t think I have ever been to a movie and not had popcorn. In fact, sometimes my husband and I will time a movie so the popcorn is our dinner.
I’m really in awe of people who just eat to live. I totally live to eat. I love food so much. And while I do love a good bougie meal, sometimes I just want a damn potato chip.
