If you have read many of my blog posts, you know I am over the “blockbuster” movie. I just want a nice little movie to make it to the theaters. I can only handle so much superhero bullshit. So, imagine my delight when I see there has been a remake of The War of the Roses entitled The Roses. It stars Olivia Coleman and Benedict Cumberbatch. They knock it out of the damn park.
I loved the original War of the Roses, starring Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner, back in the day. It was a hoot. I was pretty young when that one came out so it was not as relatable to me as this new 2025 version. Now, I have been married for nearly 33 years and I know what the highs and lows of a marriage look like. I also know what it is like to want to kill your partner.
Please understand, I have no doubt my husband feels the same way. I’m much harder to live with than he is. I’m a loon and I’m sure he has fantasized about taking me out at some point. I have a decent life insurance policy. It is only natural. I don’t hold it against him.
Again, I don’t remember a ton about the original movie, except that I enjoyed it. The same can be said of the new film, The Roses. It was a delight from beginning to end. I particularly enjoyed the British humor. Coleman’s and Cumberbatch’s chemistry was fantastic. I totally bought them as a couple. I hope they go on to make more movies together. They are such fantastic actors.
What I really enjoyed about this movie is that it was not a remake of the original, but more of a reimagined, modern-day version. The premise was the same, but the storyline was totally different. Both are wonderful for their time and in their own way.
It was just really nice to be able to go to the theater to see this type of movie. I got movie popcorn and a soda the size of my head and was quite happy. Netflix is great, but sometimes it is nice to get out of the house to see a good movie.
The love the Roses share is deep and powerful—so is the hatred, at times. I think all married people can relate to that. Of course, I’ve wanted to throw fruit at my husband, but I’ve never wanted to kill him by withholding an EPIPen for a severe allergy. It’s a fine line, folks.
I just think it is nice to be able to watch a movie that is relatable. Maybe you can live vicariously through these characters for a couple of hours. Then come home and nobody gets hurt.
I just question why more movies like this can’t get made for the big screen. I know. I’ve gone on this tangent before, but here we are again. If you haven’t already seen The Roses, go treat yourself. If it’s not playing at your theater, be sure to catch it when it starts streaming. Coleman and Cumberbatch are absolute delights and you will leave feeling better about your own marriage. If not, you will definitely leave with some good ideas on how to torture your spouse. Win-win!
