To My Teens Navigating High School and Your Last Year of Middle School: Things I Want You to Know

And just like that, it’s a new school year.

As you step into this new school year, whether it’s your last year of middle school or your third year of high school, I want to take a moment to share some thoughts and advice with you.

This time can be both exciting and overwhelming, and it’s okay to feel a mix of emotions. Summer went way too fast, and I feel like we didn’t even have a chance to just rest, relax, and recharge our batteries.

Here are some things I want you to know as you navigate these years:

Embrace Change

Change can be scary, but it’s also a part of life. Neither of you are moving to a new school this year but new classes, new teachers, maybe even not having any friends in your classes this year. Meeting new people, and facing new challenges can be intimidating. Remember, every change is an opportunity to grow and learn. Embrace these moments with an open heart and mind. You are stronger and more capable than you think.

Be Yourself

It’s easy to feel pressured to fit in or be like everyone else, especially during these years. But the most important thing you can do is be true to yourself. Your uniqueness is your strength. Don’t be afraid to show the world who you are. Surround yourself with friends who appreciate you for you, and don’t change yourself just to fit in.

Work Hard, But Don’t Forget to Have Fun

School can be demanding, with assignments, tests, and projects. It’s important to stay focused and do your best, but don’t let stress take over your life. Balance is key. Make time for hobbies, sports, and activities you enjoy. Laugh, play, and enjoy these years. They are special and will create memories that last a lifetime.

Ask for Help When You Need It

You don’t have to have everything figured out on your own. If you’re struggling with schoolwork, feeling overwhelmed, or just need someone to talk to, reach out. Teachers, myself, counselors, friends, and family are there to support you. Asking for help is a sign of strength, not weakness.

Take Care of Yourself

Your mental and physical health are important. Eat well, get enough sleep, and take breaks when you need them. Practice self-care, whether it’s reading a book, taking a walk, or simply relaxing. Pay attention to your feelings and don’t ignore them. If you’re feeling down or anxious, talk to someone you trust.

Be Kind and Compassionate

High school and middle school can be tough for everyone. You never know what someone else is going through. Practice kindness and empathy. A simple smile or kind word can make a huge difference in someone’s day. Treat others the way you want to be treated.

Stay Curious and Open-Minded

This is a time to explore and discover new interests and passions. Be open to new experiences and ideas. Join clubs, try new activities, and take classes that interest you. You might discover a talent or passion you never knew you had.

Remember, It’s Okay to Make Mistakes

Nobody is perfect. You will make mistakes, and that’s okay. What matters is how you learn from them and move forward. Every mistake is a lesson in disguise. Don’t be too hard on yourself. Celebrate your achievements, no matter how small, and use setbacks as opportunities to grow.

Cherish Your Friendships

Friends are an important part of your journey. They will share in your joys and support you in tough times. Be a good friend, and cherish the bonds you create. These friendships can last a lifetime and will be a source of strength and happiness.

Dream Big and Believe in Yourself

You have so much potential. Don’t be afraid to dream big and set goals for yourself. Believe in your abilities and work towards your dreams with determination and passion. You are capable of amazing things.

As you navigate these years, remember that you are loved and supported. I am proud of you and most importantly I hope you both are very proud of yourself too. I am excited to see the incredible people you are becoming. Take each day as it comes, and know that you are never alone on this journey.

Final thoughts…. Make good choices and be kind not only to others but yourself too! There is no such thing as perfect! Just try your best. Ask for help on anything, I am here if you need to vent and I just listen or if you want advice. Don’t forget I was a teen once too navigating middle school and high school!
