The Zen Den

Hello and welcome to The Zen Den. My name is Alison and while I am passionate about many things, my most inspiring driving force is human connection. Blogger, content writer, orthopedic exercise specialist, motivational speaker, international yoga pro, published songwriter, avid poker player, mom and wife are just a few of my titles. But when I do my job at NASA, I am known simply as “The Fairy Zenmother” a role I deeply love because people invite me into their space to help them find their center, relax and stretch their muscles and destress their mind. Here in the blogosphere version of The Zen Den, I invite you into my world where I will explore ideas for creating a better tomorrow and a kinder today. And hopefully, with insight, authenticity and humor; my words, observations and experiences will help you feel calm, centered, intellectually challenged and spiritually enlightened. Alternatively, if you have something you would like to see covered in The Zen Den, just let me know. Your feedback is welcome and valuable to the success of this blog. Finally, my heart is filled with gratitude to have this opportunity to share with all of you.

The Life We Choose

On Thanksgiving Eve I woke up and logged on to Facebook to check in with my friends and family. I was overly delighted to see so many smiling faces celebrating moments of gratitude. It warmed my heart. And then as quick as my cup was made full, I sadly ran into her message for the day. As I read her toxic, profanity-laced words expressed and parroted back by those who see the world through the same lens as she does, I immediately felt sad for my once close friend, for the lack of joy that must be missing in her daily life, for those she enflames with her conspiratorial hate speech and for anyone who exists in such a chaotic, conflicted bubble. This spontaneously flowed out:

I read the words expressed on her page
I think to myself
“Why so much hate?”
“Why so much rage?

Seeds of destruction, division, despair
So whimsically sewn without thought or care
In a time of Thanksgiving, when we pause to give grace
The message is vengeance, defiance, revolt “in your face”

Like moth to a flame the crows come to feed
Loving the frenzy, they feast on the seed
No blossoms of gold may you bloom and grow
Not a thought given to “you reap what you sow”

What spirit is this? How dark is the heart?
How heavy, how burdened, how broken apart
Oh brothers and sisters our lives go so fast,
Every moment on earth might just be our last

Time is too precious to spend on such things
Let’s garden together and see what that brings
You’re my neighbor, not my enemy unless you so choose
We’ve got so much to gain if we just let hate lose
