In the month of December, folks all over America enjoy a season highlighted with family traditions. Whether celebrating Hanukkah, Christmas or any other Holiday festivities – most of these annual gatherings include a narrative of peace, love and light for not just Americans, but for all mankind.
Over the last year we have heard the phrase “peaceful transfer of power” repeated over and over again to the point where this historic political tradition may have lost its impact on our own personal scale of value and importance. Because it has always occurred, we tend to take it for granted and assume that’s just how it’s done. It looks like we may have been shortsighted in that assumption.
As we all know, President George W. Bush left a heart-warming letter of congratulations welcoming President Barack Obama and the first lady to the White House. In keeping with that presidential tradition, Obama did the same for President Donald J. Trump. However, at this point none of us know if that historical tradition will be offered to President-Elect Joe Biden, even though that considerate gesture has always been more about the outward display of continuity for America and the world than about political differences, personal feelings or grievances.
Nevertheless, a few weeks after we have enjoyed the joy of Christmas carols or watching children play spin the dreidel, in our nation’s capital there will be a transfer of power – what may be missing is the “peaceful” aspect. Unfortunately, we are powerless to affect what one man will decide in his heart. The only thing you and I have control over is how we react and respond to the process.
While we celebrate the narrative of “Peace on earth, good will towards men” it appears that many of us are in defiance of that sentiment when it comes to the real life, human application of what that truly means.
What message will we put forth over the next few weeks? Will we continue the beauty of the season of “all is calm and all is bright” or will we choose to allow the light of the bright star shining in the sky to fade in our hearts?
My hope is each of us will examine our own hearts, our intentions, our beliefs about ourselves and our fellow man and take the opportunity to insert the reality of “peace on earth, good will towards men, women, neighbors, strangers, etc.” into all our interactions.
Wishing you all a very, Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays and may we all embrace the spirit of the season each and every day throughout the coming year!
“Let there be PEACE on earth . . . and let it begin with me.”
