“They’re making a mistake because I have a gut, and my gut tells me more sometimes than anybody else’s brain can ever tell me.” President Donald J. Trump
From the global economy to social interaction to the effects of climate change on our planet, we have evolved into a data driven world. To make educated, morally and fiscally beneficial decisions, companies rely on data more than ever to tell the real truth and reveal the big picture. In the scientific sphere, research and development completely revolves around the world of conclusive data analysis.
Without data integration, companies the size of IBM or Apple would have no real pulse on the financial health of their companies. Data analysis, to large business is like a Full-body CT Scan which allows them to identify and target weaknesses while bolstering and modeling areas of financial growth and success.
Today whether in the science or business world, analytical intelligence is no longer based on speculation or “gut-feel” but rather on up-to-date, actionable insight birthed by the mother lode of truth – Data driven facts.
With that said – what do we do when the leader of the free world has no interest in facts but instead prefers his opinions and reveres his gut instincts over expert analysis? And furthermore, as concerned global citizens, how do we inspire our fellow man to care about cold hard facts over myth-based propaganda and hyperbole?
If we truly care, we must each become purveyors of truth. Data and facts don’t lie. Unfortunately, people often do, for a variety of self-serving reasons.
The sad truth is Trump and many of the conservatives who support him have made climate change a political issue. It isn’t. It is a human survival issue and national and international science academies agree with that assessment.
Interestingly enough, Trump and his most fervent supporters twist the narrative and accuse the scientists of having political motivations. In discussing the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) findings, Trump stated, “You’d have to show me the scientists because they have a very big political agenda.” That statement was made to counter the following quote from his own governmental agencies findings.
“Scientific evidence for warming of the climate system is unequivocal.”
– Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change
According to NASA scientists, the evidence that our planet is in peril is irrefutable. While it may take decades for earth’s citizens to fully understand the catastrophic effects of our inaction now – only those who are completely self-indulgent, arrogant and ill-informed will choose to stick their heads in the sand and do nothing.
This is science. Science is based on facts supported by data. Whether we choose to believe one man’s gut whose opinions are based on myth or thousands of data points proving the opposite – is a decision each of us must grapple with.
From the dire consequences for our coral reefs to the devastating effects of melting glaciers – scientists from all over the globe are shouting on a bullhorn begging us to hear the earth’s cry for our help.
I hope for all of our sakes we start to care more about truth than opinion. Because at this moment in time, the data driven CT scan of our planet has identified a pervasive terminal illness and the future of life as we know it demands that we move beyond our political biases and take action now . . . of course, that is if we truly care.
